After 30 years in engineering, Peter Moors wanted a change from working in an office. He had been helping a friend at weekends in the woods who encouraged him to change direction and work with his friend making hurdles in the woods. Five years ago he started his own business making hurdles, rustic plant supports, benches, tables and chairs. He also restarted his boyhood hobby woodturning wooden bowls using timber sourced from the woods where he works. As well as teaching at the Springhead Trust and Crumpets Farm, Peter has exhibited at Walford Mill, Artsreach Art of Craft and in Dorset Arts Week.

Peter works locally coppicing and thinning to restore neglected woodland to management. Dorset’s woodlands have been managed in this way for centuries and provide sustainable materials for his work as well as a sustainable habitat for the indigenous flora and fauna. Peter believes Dorset’s woodlands are beautiful and inspiring places and as such are worthy of protection. Four years ago he joined the Dorset Coppice Group, an organisation created to secure the businesses of its members and educate the public, students and schoolchildren about the importance of local woodlands for employment and recreation. He is now a member of the board of directors of the group.

As well as his usual range of products he makes one off pieces and is happy to take on commissions.

Shalimar Designs' products are manufactured from sustainable materials obtained from well managed local woodland sources.
